COWCC LAKE DUNSTAN CYCLE CHALLEGE - 2025

 

About the event

 

The Lake Dunstan Cycle Challenge is a 90km sealed road circuit, generally flat, from Cromwell around Lake Dunstan passing through Northburn, Tarras, Luggate and back down Wanaka Road, returning to The Gate Hospitality & Tourist Centre.

 

Please note you will be automatically placed within your applicable age-grade catergory for the race and medals will be awarded for the first 3 female and male riders in each of the following categories; U23 (16-22), Senior (23-34), Masters 1-2 (35-44), Masters 3-4 (45-54), Masters 5-6 (55-64), Masters 7-8 ( 65+).

 

Riders will be asked to form up in waves matching the category they normally race in (CAT 1-4), we ask any riders with limited experience to please select CAT 4 when entering.

 

Prize money will be awarded to the first 3 female and male riders -  $500 1st place, $250, 2nd place, $150 3rd place

 

Trophies will be awarded to the first placed riders in the Male & Female categories, Medals will be awarded to the first 3 riders in each age-grade category and tokens for spot prizes will be given out at the finish line and collected at the prize giving.

 

Prize giving will be held at the Forage Cafe at 1pm.

 

​Your safety

This ride will involve riding on State highway 6, 8A and 8B.

 Race Rules:

Aero bars are NOT permitted.

Ride as far left as practical.
Absolutely no crossing the centreline permitted.
No support vehicles to follow the riders/race.
You must make attempts to not impede the normal traffic flow.
You must obey all normal road rules, the instructions provided at the ‘race briefing’, and the direction of the marshals.
NOTE: The Race Referee will disqualify any rider disobeying race/road rules.

 

​Generally, disruption to the State highway must be kept to a minimum. Traffic management marshals will be monitoring various conflict points such as the one-way bridges at Lindis Crossing and Luggate. The marshals will warn competitors and other road users of hazards only. They have no power to stop traffic.

 

​COURSE DETAILS

 

Start and Finish

 

Registration will be at The Forage Cafe from 0830 am. You will be given a transponder and race number at registration. Please be early for registration – please note a late entry fee applies to entries on the day.

 

The race starts from Forage Cafe behind Pilot Vehicle after briefing at 9:45 am.

 

​Finish is on Shortcut Road, before returning to The Forage Cafe car park via the new underpass under SH8B for prizegiving.

 

PLEASE NOTE there is a very sharp turn off SH6 onto Shortcut Road, so take extra care there.

 

​All equipment shall be the competitor’s responsibility and shall conform in all ways to the ‘Race Rules’.

Competitors must listen carefully to instructions at the briefing, and note that an ‘Event Plan’ will be available for inspection. 

 

Copies of the ‘Race Briefing’ will be available at the Registration Desk.

 

​Note that persons who do not attend the ‘Race Briefing’ will not be allowed to enter the race. 

 

​Note: Please follow directions at the briefing. Further, note that no racing will be permitted from the start to Deadman’s Point Bridge… this zone is NEUTRAL. Racing is not permitted after crossing the finish line on Shortcut Road (”Race Finish”) to The Forage Cafe Car Park. Parking, refreshments and social facilities will be available at Forage Cafe.

·       I am aware of the dangers of road racing and acknowledge that I am responsible for all of my equipment and will compete in the Challenge at my own risk; 

·       I have read and understood all instructions relating to the Challenge and acknowledge that they are clear and unambiguous; 

·       I will obey the road rules at all times and acknowledge that there are no road closures and no guarantee that members of the public will obey the road rules; 

·       I acknowledge that COWCC, its volunteers and contractors (the Organisers) have done their best to make the Challenge as safe as they can, taking into account that they cannot control every eventuality; 

·       If I am involved in an accident, I will not seek to blame or make a claim against the Organisers;

·       If I have any concerns with the Challenge, I will raise them with only the Organisers and no-one else, recognising that I will otherwise jeopardise the future of the Challenge;

·       if I do not hold a Cycling New Zealand licence, I accept that I do not have the benefit of any insurance cover provided by Cycling New Zealand;

·       I agree to any photos or results of myself being shared on social media.
