Age Groups/Categories

Please take care to select the age group/category most relevant to your age, river racing experience and race ambitions.

Open - All individuals are eligible to enter the open category regardless of their age and experience. The Open age group waves start first, and generally include the fastest paddlers.  All paddlers are eligible to enter the Open Category.

Veteran - Open to all individuals aged 40 or over on race day.

Classic - Open to all individuals aged 50 or over on race day.

Junior - Open to individuals under the age of 20 on race day.

Novice- Open to individuals of any age who are new to Down River Racing for their first 2 summer racing seasons.

Doubles- One category, combining all age groups and gender.

Wave starts are established on the basis of the age group/category entered. Wave order is most likely to be in the order listed above, but may change at the discretion of the organisers. Novice category paddlers are identified with coloured bibs to ensure that the River Safety team can identify those new to the sport. Note that entering the Novice category does not reduce the level of personal responsibility required by you to safely navigate the course.

All entrants must have completed a grade 2 certificate by the 31st of October at the latest.
