Island Iron is an approximately 17 km open water race that begins with Beach start at Cadboro Bay going south to Oak Bay Marina, around a group of small islands then across Baynes Channel and back to Cadboro Bay. The short course of 6-7km along more sheltered waters allows juniors and novices to join in the fun. CORA CUP POINTS Teams competing for the CORA Cup, need to register the exact same team name, age class and division for all CORA Cup races. Please refer to CORA Cup Rules.
Safety: This is an open water event. Conditions can be challenging with strong currents behind the islands and crossing Baynes Channel. Safety is paramount and race rules will be enforced. Sterns are required to attend pre-race meetings 30 min. before race start. The race course can be altered at any time, including during the race in the interest of safety. All crews MUST ensure their paddlers have complete a huli drill in the past year.
Canoes & Equipment: Each crew is responsible for securing their own canoes, paddles and PFDs. PFDs must be Canadian Coast Guard Certified. All boats must have a minimum of six PFDs, a spray deck (mandatory) and two bailing buckets. Boats will be randomly checked and those not complying will be disqualified from racing.
CORA Membership: All racers must have 2024 CORA membership or have purchased CORA single day pass for Island Iron - this needs to be acquired in advance Race Location And Parking: Gyro Park is located at the end of Sinclair Road (main parking lot) and Penrhyn Street (boat unloading only). Parking is free in main lot. Parking is not allowed on the grass in unloading area. Post Race lunch is provided by L48, there are cafes, pub and groceries in walking distance.
