Marlborough Tri & Multisport Club present the Portage kayak, waka ama & ocean rowing event for 2024
When: Saturday 25th May 2024
Event day registration opens 7:30am
Race briefing 8:20am - all competitors must attend
On the water by 9am with race starts from 9:15 am
Prize giving at Le Cafe approx 1:30pm following race finish. All competitors are eligible for spot prizes (if present at the prize giving!).
Where: Picton foreshore
Entries: $35 per person for all Kayak and Waka Ama boat and course types.
Ocean Rowing $20 pp as there are no category prizes, still eligible for spot prizes.
On the day cash entries accepted at race registration with additional $10 fee.
Course info:
The course start/finish line has changed this year to avoid ferries during the race - all races will start at Mabel Island. Paddlers/craft on the water by 9am for a neutral paddle from Picton foreshore to the start line at Mabel Island. On the route to and from the start/finish line the ferry path will be crossed – paddlers must not cross within 500m of the ferry, and race officials’ advice must be followed.
Short course approx 8km of racing, 20km paddling all up as there is a neutral return paddle.
Long course full portage - the kayak long course is the traditional Portage Race with a change in the course for 2024. Single waka (W1) are welcome to enter this event also.
Long course - Waka Ama and Ocean Rowing approx 30km.
Option for kayakers to enter this course this year but there are no prizes for kayaks on this course option as the main event and long course for kayaks is the Portage Kayak Race!

Course descriptions:
Short course 8km race (20km total): Kayak, Waka Ama and Ocean Rowing
8 km from Mabel Island to Torea Bay. From the start line at Mable Island, cross Queen Charlotte Sound to Ngatawhetawheta point and into Torea Bay, continue all the way into Torea Bay and finish adjacent the jetty. The return leg is a neutral paddle, all paddlers/rowers are to remain together.
Kayak long course 30km paddle/5km portaging (Kayaks & W1)
Leg 1: Kayak 8 km from Mabel Island to Torea Bay.
Leg 2: Portage 1km Torea Bay to Torea Saddle, return.
Leg 3: Kayak 12km Torea Bay to Mistletoe Bay.
Leg 4: Portage 1.5km Kenepuru Road intersection and return.
Leg 5: Kayak 9km Mistletoe Bay to Mabel Island.
Waka Ama or Ocean Rowing full course no portage 30km
Follows the same course as the kayak long course but without the portaging.
Mable Island to Torea Bay to Mistletoe Bay to Mabel Island. From the start line at Mable Island to Torea bay via Ngatawhetawheta point and continue all the way into Torea Bay. Return to Ngawhetawheta point then to Torapapa point. From Torapapa point head north into Onahau & Mistletoe bays, return to Torapapa point then cross Queen Charlotte Sound to Wedge point then to the finish at Mabel Island.
