Went out fast - we were the first 3 to the first bridge. Held lead in our group throughout but lost time at the Narrows (Tony had a wardrobe malfunction😫 so probably lost 3-4 minutes at the portage). Final 5km hard for tony so we had to stop / reduce pace a few times - but held on. Next year’s goal should be sub 2:35. Or try a double.

1st time paddling on the ocean - happy to have survived. Westerly wind all the way - a bit bumpy for a novice. Glad I paddled the S18S - Tired by 3/4 - out of shape and trained in the morning and hard the day before (after a long break). Stunning day and good to be on the ocean.

Race report

0.34m on Toodyay gauge. Shallow! Slow. Gruelling. Took me 40 mins longer than last year (not much training this year). I reckon I ran aground 10 times and got out and walked 3 or 4 times (lots of others too), and annoyingly I had a swim at Glen Avon after the second drop (not much of a swim - it wasn't deep enough). Compulsory portage at Extracts. Frustrating when you pick the wrong line and get stuck on a sand bank or a rock (clearly I'm not great at picking lines in shallow water). Grinding in shallow water was made worse by weed and logs. Really hope there's some rain before the AD - otherwise it's going to be a slow and tiring first day. And I should have worn gloves - blisters on both hands. I'm glad I did it / enjoyed finishing. Paul, Jonty and Hamish - support crew.

9km / 1 hr into the race I hit a log with underslung rudder (PRS) - couldn't steer so stopped to bash it back into shape. From hit to getting back up to speed took 6mins 30. Not great. Other than that my average kmh was 10.1 - which I'm happy with. HR was a bit high for the first 5km (upstream), >180. But came down to about 160 for the rest of the race and still 10.1kmh average. Go figure. Kick up rudder next year! Only 9 secs slower than last year - so I'm happy.
